Constructing a Cylinder

Helen Keller Middle School's New Haven Math Trail

Cross High Street and continue up Chapel Street. You will pass the entrance to the Yale Center for British Art. Between that building and the Yale Repertory Theater you will see stairs that lead to the entrance of Scoozi Restaurant.

Look at the five metal cylinders at the top of the stairs.

a. If you had to construct the cylinders, how much metal would you need? Calculate the surface area of one cylinder. Include the top but not the bottom of the cylinder.
b. Suppose the cylinders are filled with cement. What volume of cement would you need to fill one cylinder?
