Constructing Battell Chapel

Helen Keller Middle School's New Haven Math Trail

Walk down Church Street to Elm Street. Walk up Elm Street to the southwest corner of Elm Street and College Street. Locate Battell Chapel.

In 1863, Joseph Battell gave Yale $30,000 for use in the construction of a new chapel, large enough to house daily chapel and serve as a memorial to those fallen in the Civil War. After some delay, the chapel was completed in 1876.

Find the portion of the building that faces College Street near the corner of Elm Street. Inside, this part of the building houses the chapel's altar.

a. This part of the building takes on a unique shape. If the shape continued all the way around instead of ending at the chapel's straight wall, how many sides would it have?
b. If you were building the chapel you would need to know the angle at which the sides meet so that you could cut the stone for the outside of the building and the woodwork for the inside. At what angle do the sides of this part of the building meet? Include a sketch of the problem and explain your method in the space provided.
