A City Hall Sculpture


Helen Keller Middle School's New Haven Math Trail




Cross Church Street. Directly across from the Green, you will see New Haven City Hall. Locate the sculpture in the front of the building.

Answer the following questions about the sculpture:

a. What does the sculpture commemorate?
b. Read the entire inscription at the base of the sculpture. Record one fact that you did not know previously about this event.
c. In order to create this sculpture, the artist had to know about scale. Find the man holding the book in the sculpture and measure the height of the book. If the book used as a model for the sculpture is really 7 ½ inches high, describe the scale used by the artist.
d. If you had been a model for the sculpture, how tall would you be in the sculpture? (Hint: Convert your height to inches first) Show your work in the space provided.
