The Hewitt Quad Probability Question

Helen Keller Middle School's New Haven Math Trail

Walk down the stairs in front of the Sterling Memorial Library and onto the paths surrounding the grassy areas. Turn left past Berkeley College and cross Wall Street. On the other side of this street is Hewitt Quad.

There are five buildings in the area of Hewitt Quad, each with their own unique architectural style. They are:
·Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library - constructed of translucent Vermont marble panes framed in Vermont granite, it is the home of the Gutenberg Bible.
·Woodbridge Hall - houses the offices of the president and secretary of the university.
·Book and Snake - a Yale secret society.
·Bicentennial Buildings - houses the University Commons dining hall and Woolsey Hall.
·Scroll and Key - a Yale secret society.

a. Secret societies are a tradition of undergraduate life at Yale, dating back to Skull and Bones, which was founded in 1832. They are open to seniors by invitation and have always maintained an air of mystery as to what takes place inside. Suppose you were to pick two buildings on Hewitt Quad at random. What is the probability that you would choose the two secret societies? Show the sample space for this problem and your probability computation in the space provided.
b. Take a closer look at the two secret society buildings. Scroll and Key is back behind Woodbridge Hall and you'll have to walk around to see it. What do you notice about these buildings that is odd? Why do you suppose this is (remember, they're secret societies)?

While you are on Hewitt Quad you might want to look at the sculpture in front of Woolsey Hall. It is called Gallows and Lollipops, and is one of the final pieces by famed American sculptor Alexander Calder (1898 - 1976).
