across from the entrance to Sterling Libraray
In front of the library you will see a fountain sculpture, "Women's Table." Designed by Maya Lin
(Class of 1981, Architecture 1986), the sculpture records the number of women registered in all schools
of the university in each year since its founding in 1701, beginning with the registration of the first
women students in the art school in 1873. Ms. Lin is famous as the designer of both the Vietnam War
Memorial in Washington, D.C. and the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama.
a. As you move around the sculpture you will see the years listed once every ten years. Find the marking
for 1950 and record the number of women registered at Yale in that year. Continue to record the number
of women for all the years from 1950 to 1969 (twenty years in total).
b. Either by hand or using your TI-83 graphing calculator, create a box and whisker plot of the data.
Record the following values: Min, Lower Quartile, Median, Upper Quartile, Max. Then carefully draw your
box and whisker plot in the space provided.
c. Is the 1969 number an outlier? Explain how you decided by showing your work in the space provided.
d. The entry for 1969 is marked with an asterisk on the sculpture. Examine the sculpture carefully to
find out what this asterisk means. (Note: Yale College is the undergraduate school at Yale. It does not
include graduate schools such as the Yale School of Law.)
