MEDIA CENTER

The goal of the Helen Keller Middle School Media Center is to provide opportunities for students to conduct research in an atmosphere conducive to meeting the needs of an ever-changing world in a technological environment.  In order to accomplish this goal, the Media Center has become the focal point of the school where students and teachers can access material from a variety of sources, including on-line services, CD-ROM, laser discs, the internet and current print material. Students will have opportunities during the year to conduct research for class projects as part of interdisciplinary units of study designed by each team.  Many of the projects and units, including student work and photographs are found on our website, under the Projects link.

The Director of Learning Resources and Technology is dedicated to heightening the awareness of the importance of critical thinking skills and problem solving, using the Connecticut Standards as a guide. Locating answers to problems and researching questions require strategies that are used in our Media Center.  Students learn to look at the problem, evaluate its components, conduct the research, synthesize the material and ultimately evaluate the completed product.

Students learn research skills that are relevant to their studies.  In this way, they are experiencing hands-on learning while meeting the objectives of their classes.  The Fine and Practical Arts Team and facilitates the setting of goals and objectives for interdisciplinary units of study.
