Project Title:
Romare Bearden, the Jazz Painter

Project Purpose:
To use the "critique method" in viewing works of art in general, and the works of Romare Bearden, the Jazz Painter, in particular.

CORE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Students will:

1. View Mrs. Cioppa's Powerpoint presentation on the works of Romare Bearden, the Jazz Painter, with a backdrop of jazz music

2.
Recognize the importance of Romare Bearden in the history of Black artists in the 20th Century and  support the concept of February as Black History Month

3. Realize that artists convey cultural, social and historical meanings in their artworks. 

4. Recognize the importance of the Harlem Renaissance and its influence in African American and American culture. 

5.  Observe the critique method, a method that includes a discussion (written or verbal) that addresses line, form, texture, color, content, and technique

6. Choose one painting from the PowerPoint presentation

7. Critique the chosen painting, based on the critique method in an essay

8. Review their observations and comment on their personal view of the painting

Fine Arts:

Analysis, Interpretation and Evaluation (Content Standard #5): Students will reflect upon, describe, analyze, interpret and evaluate their own and others’ work.

Language Arts:

  • Interpret paintings by using prior knowledge and experiences
  • Engage in a process of generating ideas, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing or presenting
  • Proofread and edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization
1. Create a split screen to view the PowerPoint selection and Word to formulate their critique

2. Use Word to write the critique

3. Copy and insert their chosen painting, for visual reference, from PowerPoint into Word

4. Save their work in the Student Work Folder on the network
