This project is worth 75 points.

Consider yourself very fortunate in that you and three other people are able to travel to one (1) stadium of your choice in the United States.  The pre-requisite is that the stadium must be at least 300 miles from Easton, Connecticut.

Goals: 

To compare total cost of your trip, including food, travel, cost of baseball tickets, souvenirs, food at stadium. Two modes of transportation must be compared (train, plane or car).

Requirements:

  1. Use this list of Requirements as a checklist to keep you organized. Check off items as you complete them.
  2. Select 1 stadium in the United States, more than 300 miles from Easton.
  3. You must be able to reach your stadium by 2 modes of transportation (air, train, car)
  4. Find out the distance between Easton, CT and your stadium
    1. Use Mapquest to find the distance
  5. When traveling by car, the following information will remain constant:
    1. Cars will get 20 miles to a gallon of gas
    2. Use gasbuddy to calculate the cost of gas based on your location
  6. Hotels will cost $100 per night (4 people to one room)
    1. If traveling by car, you will drive no more than 400 miles each day
  7. Food will cost $50 per person a day, excluding stadium food
  8. When traveling by air,
    1. You will need to find out the cost of a round trip  ‘economy’ ticket
    2. Use airline websites or discount websites for finding out the cost
  9. When traveling by train,
    1. You will need to find out the cost of a round trip  ‘economy’ ticket
    2. Use Amtrak to find out the cost of train tickets
  10. Visit the stadium website
    1. Find out the cost of the tickets you would like to purchase
    2. Try to find out the cost of food and determine your total (if this is an impossibility, you may use the range listed below) (Sheet 2-Stadium Food)
      1. Hot dog:  $7.50
      2. Soda:  $5.00
      3. Peanuts:  $5.00
      4. Pop corn:  $7.00
      5. Crackerjacks:  $5.75
      6. Ice cream:  $5.00
      7. Candy:  $4.75
    3. Make sure to factor in souvenirs (Sheet 3 - Souvenirs)
      1. Hats: 25.00
      2. T-shirts: 15.00
      3. Mugs: $13.00
      4. Penants: 15.00
  11. Create an Excel spreadsheet with the information you have collected.
  12. Use the sample spreadsheet as a template. Open the sample and save in Student Work as (Name of Your Stadium-your firstname and last initial).
  13. Create a folder under Student Work:
    1. Stadium Name-Your First Name
      1. Files should include:
        1. Works Cited
        2. Spreadsheet
        3. Travel Comparison
    1. Ticket Cost
    2. Number of tickets (4)
    3. Food purchased for 4 (excluding arena food)
    4. Souvenirs purchased for 4
    5. Cost of gas based on 20 miles per gallon
    6. Hotel Cost x number of nights
    7. Food costs x 4 people based on the number of nights
    8. Use formulas in Excel
    9. Make sure you use grid lines for ease of reading
    10. Rename 1st sheet "Master Expenses"
    11. Rename and create a 2nd sheet called "Stadium Food"
    12. Rename and create a 3rd sheet called "Sourvenirs"
    13. Insert a Header in Excel stating the name of the stadium
    14. Change the orientation from portrait to landscape
    15. Adjust margins, if necessary, so all data fits on one page
  14. When synthesizing the information, determine the most cost effective way to travel and what your total cost would be for a trip to each stadium or arena. Explain in several sentences which mode of transportation would be your choice. This is your trip. You decide!
  15. Write a written reflection on the process and product.
  16. Create a Powerpoint Presentation to share with students as to your choice.
