DIRECTIONS FOR CREATING WORKS CITED

Purpose:  Aligning with 21st Century Skills, students will work in pairs to explore cultures and countries throughout the world and design a segment of a full-class electronic book.

Definition:  "Take a Walk in my Shoes" is a project that will provide an opportunity for students to research cultures and countries, aligning them with the 7th Grade World Geography timeline and using foods as the common theme. 
The end product will be a full class electronic book created in Microsoft Word, containing recipes, geographical information, a flag, map, weather, history, and cultural traditions.

CORE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Students will:

  • Work collaboratively in pairs, researching information and appropriate images
  • Create a 4 slide photo profile of their country, including:
    • recipe (traditional ... used for a holiday)
    • flag
    • map of the country
    • famous historical event
    • cultural tradition
    • famous landmark (natural or man-made)
    • typical dress (either daily or holiday)
    • a sport
    • the arts (music, art, dance, theater)
  • Take notes on their specific topics
  • Apply prior knowledge to the new situation
  • Create a Works Cited using "Microsoft Word" and include as the final slide
  • Communicate findings digitally

  

Requirements

Technology Integration

Students will:

  1. select their country randomly
  2. divide the topics for research between group members
  3. research their topics, using the print resources from the Easton Public Library, the Helen Keller Middle School Media Center, as well as pre-selected website and online databases
  4. select a recipe that is traditionally used for a holiday and that you are able to make
  5. use the list under the profile for research
  6. select images, paying attention to the rules of copyright
  7. label each image by giving it a title
  8. describe each image in no more than 2 sentences
  9. create a Works Cited using "Microsoft Word"
  10. save work on the Network under 21st Century
    • Create folders under your Period
      • Powerpoint
      • Images
      • Works Cited

 

 

Students will:

  • Use pre-selected databases,  including Nettrekker, World Book , Culturegrams, Destiny, Global Road Warrior (Easton Library Card required), World News Network, Internet Public Library or Pitara Kids Network. Click on On-line Databases to access these resources.
  • Use pre-selected image sites and label each image specifically with the url.
  • Critically evaluate the websites for accuracy and relevancy, using R-A-D-C-A-B
  • Use Powerpoint to create a 4 slide profile
  • Label images with a simple description
  • Change fonts, style, background, colors, size and arrangement
  • Format picture (add a border, change direction, size)
  • Revise and edit using the Spelling Tool
  • Combine both Powerpoints into one file, maintaining formatting
  • Save files to the proper location on the network
